Dr Mel Tonkin, Project Manager: “I have been involved with red squirrel conservation for 30 years and have witnessed their disappearance from many of their northern England woodland haunts over that time and their virtual extinction from the Central Belt of Scotland. It is still possible to stop their continued demise in Scotland by acting now on a strategic national scale. Conservationists have a duty to take action to protect precious wildlife.”
Ken Neil, Project Officer Tayside: “Once you have seen a red squirrel your enthusiasm for conserving them will never fade. The pleasure in doing my job comes from sharing this with other people and working together to play our part in making sure that we don’t let this woodland treasure disappear.”
Annie Harrison, Project Officer North East: “. "
Lewis Pate, Project Officer Argyll and Trossachs: "I discovered my initial passion for red squirrels while leading Landrover tours on Atholl Estates. People would come from all over the world to see our iconic Scottish species. Red deer stags in full antler and golden eagles were generally the most sought after. However we would pass a squirrel feeder during the start of the tour, and one red squirrel would stop our progress for 15 minutes. It made me realise how much people care about these endearing creatures. We must not let them disappear or a major part of our natural heritage will be lost, and that would be very sad."
