Volunteer

You can volunteer your time to help Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels in a number of simple ways:

Volunteer Surveyors. We need volunteers to help us complete targeted spring surveys to detect squirrels in areas where it is important for us to have current knowledge. For instance, we may wish to detect whether red squirrels have recolonised areas once the project has carried out targeted grey squirrel control activity.

Volunteers may be asked to look after some of our squirrel feeder-box hair-traps to provide us with presence/absence records of both species or undertake early morning squirrel counts to provide evidence of changing numbers. This information is essential for building a record of our project's success.  A successful result could persuade more people to get involved with the project and maintain their red squirrel conservation activities over the longer term. With accurate information we can also target our work more closely and ensure we are putting our resources in areas where red squirrels need support most.

Volunteers General: You can help with a number of simple but vital tasks at SWT's headquarters in Leith, such as assembling squirrelpox testing kits or survey packs or mailouts of printed copies of our newsletter, Squirrel Scoop.
