FAQ: Will this project secure the future of the red squirrel in Scotland?
The chances of success are balanced in our favour because of Scotland’s still extensive and robust red squirrel populations free from grey squirrel competition and squirrelpox disease. The success of the project is not guaranteed; but, by intervening now, we believe we can halt the decline of Scotland’s red squirrels for as long as a minimal level of grey squirrel control is continued, and we hope to establish where, and to what level, that control should be focused. This will need to continue until a possible pharmaceutical solutions are developed (squirrelpox vaccine or grey squirrel contraception).
