FAQ: How long will the project last?

FAQ:  How long will the project last?

Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels (SSRS) will run over three years, starting on 1 April 2009.  As such, this project is not a long one and we do not anticipate that the future of red squirrels will be fully secure at the end of just three years.  On-going red squirrel conservation work will be required in future but we hope that the findings of this project will inform these future actions by establishing the most effective and affordable ways to protect red squirrels.  Ultimately we hope that the development of pharmaceutical control methods (i.e. contraceptives to prevent grey squirrels from breeding and a squirrelpox vaccine) will provide solutions to save red squirrels in the long term; however it could be many years before either of these is available in the affordable and easily dispensable form necessary to assist red squirrel conservation and we cannot afford to wait.
