FAQ: Are there any other red squirrels left elsewhere in the UK?

Scotland is home to around 121,000 red squirrels; this is about 75% of the entire UK population.  The last remaining populations of red squirrels in mainland England are found in Northumberland, Cumbria, North Yorkshire and North Merseyside.  The Save our Squirrels  project was launched in July 2006, with the remit to deliver red squirrel conservation, information, and access projects in those areas.

The decline of red squirrels in England can also be directly related to the spread of grey squirrels, as well as the squirrelpox virus and habitat loss.  There are thought to be around three million grey squirrels in England and between 200,000 and 300,000 greys in Scotland today.
