South Scotland
Squirrelpox is a virus carried by grey squirrels without causing them harm, but fatal to our native reds. It is already present in south Scotland as grey squirrels, some carrying squirrelpox, spread northwards from England, but the rest of Scotland currently remains squirrelpox-free. SSRS now incorporates the former Red Squirrels in South Scotland (RSSS) project, which set up a comprehensive grey squirrel control network to contain the spread of the virus.
SSRS's work in South Scotland is co-ordinated by Karen Ramoo, Project Officer for the Scottish Borders, working with Project Officer Heinz Traut, who covers Dumfries and Galloway, South and East Ayrshire and the southern parts of South Lanarkshire.
