Event title:  The Hunt for Reds in October 

Date and time:  08:00  on  02/09/11

Location:  Meet us at Glamis Castle 

Event Details: Squirrel lovers will meet with the Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels Project Officer (Ken Neil) for an early walk around the lovely grounds of Glamis Castle to try and spot the local red squirrels as they get up and about for breakfast. We’ll then move indoors to have a light breakfast ourselves as Ken delivers an illustrated talk on the work of the project and its efforts to protect one of the nation’s best-loved small animals.

Event title:  Nuts About Squirrels

Date and time:  11:00hrs Sunday 2nd October 2011

Location:  Meet us at David Marshall Lodge, Aberfoyle.

Event details: Join us at David Marshall Lodge and learn more about these endearing forest creatures.

To celebrate Red Squirrel Week, (a national week dedicated to everything red and squirrelly)

Staff from the Forestry Commission, Scottish Wildlife Trust and Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park will be on hand to advise on all squirrel matters !

There are two guided walks organised, one at 12pm and another at 2pm.

Visit the nearby squirrel hide with our expert staff and learn more about these, and other creatures that inhabit the surrounding Queen Elizabeth Forest Park.

Pine marten, water voles, osprey, golden eagle, otters, barn and tawny owls, are a few of the creatures that share this amazing forest with the red squirrels.

Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels is a project currently running in the National Park to help protect the remaining population of red squirrels, come and learn how you can help to protect our local red squirrel population by taking part in a worthwhile project working locally to protect our native biodiversity.

Price:   Event is free of charge…all ages welcome. (Small charge for some crafts) 

Booking:  Please book on the day for guided walks, otherwise just turn up.

Additional Information:  Bring suitable outdoor clothing and footwear for guided walks on forest tracks.

Event title: “Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels." Annabel Harrison

Location: The Victory Hall, Aboyne

Event Details: The red squirrel is an iconic and much loved species in Scotland. However, habitat destruction and introduction of the invasive American grey squirrel have lead to a drastic decrease in numbers of this charismatic species. The Scottish Wildlife Trust's Saving Scotland's Red Squirrels project aims to halt the decline of red squirrel populations in key areas of north Scotland and improve habitat conditions to allow red squirrels to thrive and increase in number. Come and hear about the project's activities in the North East and learn how you can get involved to become part of the nation's first co-ordinated approach to red squirrel conservation!

Event title: Red Squirrel Survey Workshop. Annabel Harrison
Date and time: 14:30 on 24/09/2011
Location: Paths within the Bell Wood, Aboyne

Event Details: The red squirrel is one of Scotland's best loved species. However, numbers are decreasing as a result of habitat destruction and the introduction of the American grey squirrel. The Scottish Wildlife Trust's Saving Scotland's Red Squirrels project aims to halt the decline of red squirrel populations and improve conditions to allow red squirrels to thrive. An important aspect of the project is the monitoring of red and grey squirrel numbers and distribution, which helps us to target our conservation efforts. Come and learn about our squirrel monitoring methods, have a go at squirrel surveying and learn how you can become a valuable member of our squirrel monitoring team.

Event title: SOS – Saving Our Species. Annabel Harrison (Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels) and Sarah Atkinson (Scottish Mink Initiative)

Location: Aberdeen Art Gallery

Event Details: The infamous grey squirrel and American mink highlight the threats posed to our native species. Come and hear about current projects underway to protect our native wildlife.
