Trap loan schemes
SSRS project officers run free trap-loan schemes to share squirrel traps around the community to help the effort to halt the spread of grey squirrels. If you would like to get involved in one of our trap-loan schemes contact your local SSRS project officer today. Both landowners and householders are eligible for this scheme.
Trapping packs for households are now available containing all the information you need to know about risk assessment, control methods, legalities, completing a trapping diary and much more. Support with animal dispatch will be available from project officers or designated community controllers. Training will be available and provided to anyone carrying out animal dispatch on behalf of this project. Trained individuals can also become community controllers for their local area. This is a free service; however donations for participation would be welcome. This will allow us to by more traps to loan.
SSRS control methods
SSRS control methods are considered by DEFRA as the most humane method of control under the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986. All individuals undertaking control on behalf of this project must abide by the practices and standards outlined in the project’s Standard Operating Procedures for Grey Squirrel Control. All SSRS staff and volunteers are trained to follow these standards when undertaking control on behalf of SSRS.
